NOTAS ACERCA DE UN NIDO DEL MANGO PECHIVERDE ANTHRACOTHORAX PREVOSTII HENDERSONII (TROCHILIDAE) EN LA ISLA DE SAN ANDRÉS EN EL CARIBE COLOMBIANO

RESUMEN

Describo por primera vez el nido de Anthracothorax prevostii hendersonii, una subespecie de colibrí restringida a las islas de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina en el Caribe colombiano. El nido tenía dos huevos cuando lo encontré en mayo del 2002, y fue monitoreado hasta que voló uno de los polluelos. Se hizo seguimiento al desarrollo de los polluelos, así como a su comportamiento y el de la hembra adulta a cargo; las interacciones de los colibríes con hormigas presentes en el árbol fueron también registradas. En general, la biología de anidación de A. p. hendersonii es muy similar a la reportada para otras especies del género. Estas observaciones representan el primer registro de anidación para Anthracothorax prevostii hendersonii en las islas del Caribe colombiano, y de una posible asociación de un nido de colibrí con la presencia de hormigas agresivas del género Pseudomyrmex.

Notes on a nest of the Green-breasted Mango Anthracothorax prevostii hendersonii on San Andrés Island in the Colombian Caribbean Sea

ABSTRACT

I describe here the nest of Anthracothorax prevostii hendersonii, a hummingbird subspecies restricted to the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina in the Colombian Caribbean. I found a couple of eggs in the nest, which hatched between May 13 and 15. The development and behavior of the nestlings and also of the adult female in charge of them were recorded; the interactions of the hummingbirds with ants that where present in the tree were also recorded. Most of the information about the behavior and nesting biology of the hendersonii subspecies of this hummingbird is quite similar to the previously published for other species of the same genus. These observations represent the first nesting record for Anthracothorax prevostii hendersonii in the islands of the Colombian Caribbean, as well of a possible instance of a hummingbird’s nest being associated with the presence of aggressive Pseudomyrmex ants.
