PRESENCIA DEL GUARDACAMINOS RABIMANCHADO (CAPRIMULGUS MACULICAUDUS ) EN EL VALLE DEL RÍO CAUCA, Colombia
RESUMEN
Entre 2005 y 2007, durante un proyecto de vigilancia de enfermedades virales en aves, obtuvimos siete capturas del Guardacaminos Rabimanchado ( Caprimulgus maculicaudus ) en la Reserva Natural Laguna de Sonso, Valle del Cauca. Aunque está ampliamente distribuida en las tierras bajas de Colombia y el Neotrópico, esta especie nunca había sido registrada en el valle geográfico del río Cauca. De cinco especies de aves nocturnas capturadas en 700 horas-red en el área en 2007, C. maculicaudus fue la segunda más común. Debido a la intensa exploración ornitológica de la zona, consideramos poco probable que su presencia haya sido pasada por alto anteriormente. Como alternativa, sugerimos la colonización reciente asociada con la expansión de áreas abiertas en la región.

Occurrence of the Spot-tailed Nightjar ( Caprimulgus maculicaudus ) in the Cauca River Valley, Colombia
ABSTRACT
During 2005 through 2007, as part of a project monitoring viral diseases in birds, we captured seven Spot-tailed Nightjars ( Caprimulgus maculicaudus ) at the Laguna de Sonso Natural Reserve, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Although it is widespread in the lowlands of Colombia and the Neotropics, this species had not been recorded previously in the Cauca River valley. Of the five nocturnal bird species captured in the area during 700 mist net hours in 2007, C. maculicaudus was the second most common. Owing to the intense ornithological exploration of the region, we believe it is highly improbable that the presence of this nightjar could have been overlooked in the past. Alternatively, we suggest it might have colonized the area recently as a result of the expansion of open areas in the region.
