DISTRIBUCION HABITACIONAL Y DIETA DEL PATO DE TORRENTES (MERGANETTA ARMATA) EN EL PARQUE REGIONAL NATURAL UCUMARI EN LA CORDILLERA CENTRAL DE COLOMBIA

RESUMEN
Entre julio de 1993 y diciembre de 1994 estimamos el tamaño de la población del Pato de Torrentes en los 15 km del Río Otún que atraviesan el Parque Natural Regional Ucumarí, caracterizamos el hábitat ocupado por siete parejas de patos adultos y estudiamos aspectos básicos de su alimentación. La frecuencia de observaciones en sitios particulares y la acumulación de excretas sugieren que el tamaño de esta población se mantuvo estable durante el estudio. La observación de dos parejas a lo largo del estudio nos permitió estimar la extensión media del ámbito doméstico en 1400 m lineales de río. La escasa diferencia en las variables descriptivas del hábitat entre los dos ámbitos estudiados indica una aparente constancia en los requerimientos de la especie en esta localidad. Encontramos que los sitios ocupados por las aves difieren de aquellos no ocupados únicamente en la distancia promedio en línea recta desde los remansos hasta los recodos inmediatos. La dieta del Pato de Torrentes en Ucumarí, determinada a partir del examen de excretas, indicó la predominancia de estados inmaduros de insectos acuáticos, especialmente del orden Trichoptera. Aunque la composición observada de las excretas de patos fue similar a la del contenido de estómagos de truchas capturadas en el río, se descarta la competencia alimentaria entre las especies pues la hipótesis de superposición completa de nichos tróficos fue rechazada estadísticamente.

Habitat use and diet of the Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata) in Ucumarí Regional Park in the Central Andes of Colombia

ABSTRACT
Between July 1993 and December 1994, we estimated the population size of the Torrent Duck at the Ucumarí Regional Natural Park, characterized its habitat, and described some aspects of its feeding habits and diet. We found seven pairs of adult birds along a 15 km transect of the Otún River which crosses the Park. Both the frequency of observation of the birds at some sites, and the repeated findings of feces suggest that the population size remained constant during the study period. Our focal observations of two pairs of adults allowed us to calculate a mean length for their home ranges of 1400 m. Differences in some descriptive variables among ranges indicate some flexibility of the species in its habitat requirements. Sites occupied by the ducks differed from unoccupied sites only in the visibility to the nearest river bend. The diet of the Torrent Duck, determined from examination of feces, was dominated by immature aquatic insects, particularly Trichoptera. Although the diet was similar in composition to that of Rainbow Trout caught in the river, the null hypothesis of complete niche overlap among these species was rejected; this discards the likelihood of interspecific competition for food between them.
